Practicing Law from the Meditative Perspective

 This workshop has been CANCELLED

Charles Halpern

Is your life in the law burdened by stress and by a lack of meaning? Are you approaching a time of transition in which you could reshape your professional life to align it more with your values? Do you want to explore the ways that meditation can enrich your work in law?

This workshop will build on Charles Halpern’s decades of exploration and leadership in the area of law and meditation, in law schools and in retreats for lawyers and judges. Although many people thought that law and meditation were two unconnected and incompatible realms, the practice of meditation has been increasingly recognized as an important way to deepen the experience of doing law work and to make it more sustainable, effective, and fulfilling.

The workshop will balance periods of meditation with reflective discussions on the way meditative insight can relieve stress and bring meaning to the lawyer’s work. It will also look at the ways that the meditative perspective can help to build legal institutions that more fully embody our highest aspirations for a just society. The workshop is suitable for experienced meditators and those who have never meditated.

Halpern will draw on the themes of his book, Making Waves and Riding the Currents: Activism and the Practice of Wisdom, as well as his decades of meditation practice, his innovative work as a legal educator, and the moral energy of his pioneering work in the public interest law movement. At a time of daunting global and domestic challenges, the meditative perspective can help to make the connection between lawyers’ skills and the challenges of finding just, reflective, and compassionate solutions.
