The Mind-Body Code: How Cultural and Spiritual Beliefs Affect Health and Longevity

 This workshop has been CANCELLED

Mario Martinez

Dr. Mario Martinez teaches how the mind and body communicate within a cultural context. In essential ways, our unique cultural and spiritual histories are part of what affects overall health. Based on research evidence in the fields of psychoneuroimmunology, biocultural anthropology, integrated neuroscience, and contemplative psychology, Dr. Martinez has developed what he calls the mind-body code—the means by which the symbolic self and the biological self communicate.

During this workshop, participants will learn a new vision of how health and illness are manifestations of the living consciousness we present to the immune system. Rather than a protector against germs, Dr. Martinez argues that the immune system confirms the contextual self we construct based on our cultural history. Over the course of the week, participants will learn practical didactic and experiential tools to understand:

• We are not victims of our genes

• The difference between the pathology of aging and the wellness of growing older

• How cultural and spiritual beliefs affect the immune system

• How most illnesses are expressions of what we fear to assert

• How addictions, phobias, eating disorders, and other compulsions are distractions from confronting our transcendental fears

• How psychospiritual conflicts can mimic psychiatric and autoimmune disorders

This workshop is open to all participants and does not require a background in the health or mental health sciences.
